We have them in a couple hatches I think, as spring and then later in summer but not between.. and you are right,Ash, this little fella is easier to catch than to find sitting still. I wonder if those orange tips force them to be more cautious? I enjoyed your photos Ash, very nice, makes me want a better camera...

Hey Glen, if you click on the IMG line in photobucket, it copies the url to your clipboard. Then you just paste it into your post and bingo ... there's your picture ...

Johnny.

PS: I guess you've already found that ... I'd only read page one when I posted this.

California Tortoiseshell

Going for a walk and surprise a butterfly already out. We have had snow and temps in the teens recently, so how is this possible? Some leps hibernate, including this Tortoiseshell. I decided to try my hand at a design, it is larger than life size, from a picture I took so more fun for me to do. Avoid too thick of wings chose to use 20 lb paper for the underside patterns, and wire legs, added a bit of cotton to the upper wings to make them look fluffy, and used thread stiffened with ca glue for the antennae. Still some improvements can be made to make it a bit better if I make any more of them. Brush foot family butterflies only have 4 easily visible legs the forelegs forming what appears to be a snout ...

It's beautiful.

I haven't seen any butterflies or moths here in Carlisle yet this year.

Thanks Don I’m happy with this one, the practice from previous models was very helpful. We have to wait for warmer weather for them to fly around again.. swallows are back so winter is officially over!

Mourning cloak, Melissa blue

2 new butterflies, the blue isn't out yet, but the Mourning cloaks are sunning on warm days, and guarding their little stretch of path.
Painting the legs the appropriate color or thereabouts helps the look, using a bit of cotton and painting with watercolor lightly to color the cotton adds quite a bit. Painted the antennae of the blue as they really are noticeable on the tiny butterflies

Those look really good, Glen. Had some nice sunny, warm weather last week so saw some blues out and a couple of swallowtails. Lot of flowers this year so figure by the end of the month should be butterflies all over. Just still not many birds.
