My sister is planing a 4th of July get together and wants me to make some paper ants (8-10-inches long or so). Does anyone know if a model is available?

Haven't seen any ants, but this big hornet might be a plausible substitute: .wombat.zaq.ne.jp/fare/vespa.html
Good luck.

I see one here :
[F10] ???? "??" - ???? ??? There is not a link to the model, but it is very easy to recreate this one. |

Thanks Yale and Pat_craft for the great ideas.
My sister is looking for as many as 10 ants so the easier the better. I am currently trying to convincw her that a flat sided ant (folded in half) with a forward-facing head glued on and pipecleaner legs would work. I'm going for super simple! Chris |

There is/was a paper ant out there in that size, because I downloaded it and printed it on Silver foil paper, but I have no idea where I downloaded it from... If I think of it I will let you know.

As Yale mentioned in the earlier reply, the hornet model will work with a few easy modifications. The anatomical structure of the two insects are similar...head, thorax and abdomen. The common ants head is about 20 % larger,.. thorax the same and the abdomen would be 30% or so shorter. Might also lengthen the antennae/pinscers and shorten the legs a little. Of course unless you are replicating a queen ant, there would be no wings and the color would be solid black or a medium sienna brown..

AA is correct. velvet ants aren't really ants at all, they are wingless wasps. another idea might be the confetti i've seen in some craft stores, it is of a bunch of small black ants, kind of like the spider confetti from halloween....

No easy to build models I know of. Go for the simple solution: styrofoam balls and pipe cleaners. You can add any details like eyes with paper. Spray the balls any color with ACRYLIC paint...lacquer base will eat the styrofoam.
