Canon Futabasaurus experiment

I decided to do a quick experiment this morning. Actually, I decided last night!
I've wanted to do the Canon Futabasaurus for a while. I like Plesiosaurs for their clean lines. My problem was the coloration on the Canon model. It's a very simple two-tone blue and yellow and I wanted something a little more believable. I haven't mastered digital recoloring yet, so my idea was just a simple paint job. I printed the model on scrap paper and assembled it too quickly (under two hours for sure);

Here it is attacking the SuperModel Lysander (WORST KIT IN HISTORY). The edges of the pieces bothered me and I wondered if a little genuine texture might help so stippled on a couple of layers of wood glue;

When dried, the glue really didn't add all that much texture, but it was something at least;

I gave the model an overall base coat of gray;

Then sponged on ivory for the underside and some mottled Dapple Gray for the top.

I was hoping the mottling would help break up the flatness of the surface;

It doesn't really.:(
As this was just a test, I quickly painted some black on to break it up even more;

This seemed to help a bit.
The last step was to sponge on some ivory spots all over;

The head is a very simple form. Adding a few teeth helps, but it needs more;

An interesting test. It wasn't as successful as I'd hoped, but I do think it's an improvement over the blue/yellow coloring. I guess nothing is going to disguise those edges and angles after all!

Most certainly an improvement over the original color. Thanks for posting this one.

Don't sell your self short, Chris. I think it looks pretty darn good and is a vast improvement over the stock model. Nice job!

Thumbs up

I agree with rockpaperscissor. Chris, you do things with a paintbrush that I could NEVER do on the computer, and I even have an undo button!. You are a master!
If you ever did learn to apply the same skills on computer, you would be unstoppable!

Looks a bagillion times better to me! The coloration seems much ore believable as well. I'd say mission accomplished.

Excellent repaint. It does look a lot more believable now.
