about half way done.
but yes, it is too tiny for what I wanted.
I should have printed it a little bigger.

I just built the Firecrest yesterday. Printed at 195% which is just a tad small if the scale is to be believed. Anyhoo, used 65# cover paper and didn't have any problems.

A little newbie question about paper weight... How can I convert lb to gr?
I think so:
20 lb ~ 75 gr/m2
40 lb ~ 150 gr/m2
60 lb ~ 220 gr/m2

Is it right? Sorry, I'm a beginner.

Some of the actual birds in that series are small. The cardinal that I built seems to be the correct size of the real bird.

tochiro:
You have to think Bond and Cover and Index.
Bond:
20 lb ~ 75 gr/m2 (gsm)
Usually the thin everyday typewriter/printer paper

When 60lb or 65lb card stock is referenced it is usually Cover.
Cover:
60 lb ~ 162 gr/m2
65 lb ~ 177 gr/m2

When 110lb card stock is referenced it is usually Index.
Index:
110 lb ~ 199 gr/m2

The 110 lb card stock package I buy states that it is 199 gsm.

Here is a site with a helpful chart:
Paper Weight - Conversion Chart

40 lb is unfamiliar to me but as shown on that chart it depends on what kind of paper stock. It can run from 60 gsm for Offset Text to 150 gsm for Bond.

I use 120gsm card for them too Dave. Makes them much better to handle.

Johan's birds are all life-size. The wren and the firecrest are tiny lil' critters.

I made the Wren and Firecrest some time back now and they've been living on a pot plant, but today I made the wall mounts for them ... The 'twig' Johan supplies for the Firecrest is a right lulu. See how you get on with that in card.

I'll give you a clue ... don't even try to follow the number order. Oh yeah ... and don't waste too much time looking for number 4 ... it just ain't there !!

I got there, but only through dogged determination. It would have been so much easier to go and cut a twig from the garden. I wouldn't have had to paint that either.

Keep on snippin' ... Johnny.

And the Cardinal joins the gang ...

Hmm? Yeah there's room for a few more in that corner yet ...

But the next lot are all Malcolm Topp's flyers, so the'll be hung from the roof wires.

One of these days the sun might shine into the conservatory and SHMBO will want them moved so she can shut the roof blinds, but I think they'll be safe until around May.

Keep on snippin' ... Johnny.

Well thats the only way the wife would let me buy them, she wanted birds for her little cage she bought at a thrift store. I plan on building all four in the set and mounting them on one branch as a set, have to knock out something I got from Dave first.......Rich

Well...see what you've done now?!

You've inspired me to try my hand at some Birds.
I've had these Scherft models for so long, its about time!

I needed a Xmas gift idea for me Mum, so...

I started with a Firecrest.
I did it with 65lb cardstock (which I had not trouble with),
and I enlarged to almost fit the page.
It printed a little smaller than it should be (about 80%).

I decided to print the female (or male?) at proper scale (so, about 20% bigger).
But to be honest, I think its still too small.
I also tried building the second Bird with normal paper (25lb)
which I didn't enjoy as much as with the cardstock.

I'm happy with the end result.
Everything turned out okay, except I had the most trouble dealing
with the seams on their heads. I just couldn't hide them.

I decided to make a mount for both Birds...sort of a "lovebirds" display.

The wooden plaque is from Michaels Craft Store ($1.89)...and I wiped it down with
some ancient woodstain, and gave it two coats of low gloss Krylon clear.

The Branch is cardstock tubes...printed first with wood textures, then cut and rolled into narrow tubes.
Then I cut them up and glued a few pieces together and covered
all the seams and paper edges with glue and bits of torn printed wood paper.

Drilled a hole in the Plaque and glued the branch in place.
(Birds have already been installed, but the glue on their tiny little feet
is still drying so I haven't taken any photos yet.
I'll follow up tomorrow.)

I just reread the first post in this thread,
and I guess I was supposed to create a separate thread for my Firecrest build
...so I did.

Here: http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/o...tml#post396708

Sorry, if I hijacked the thread...but I got carried away with all things bird.
lol

How come there is no Animal category in the Build section?
