Johnny.
Yep, that is it. Thanks. Didn't check the links VK posted earlier. It was a quick little build that easily balanced on the finger.

Johnny - the Wren came out very nicely!

Did you stick it to the plant or just shape the feet beforehand?

I first tried it perched on a Biro and found that it's feet gripped quite well. By curling the claws around the plant with tweezers it gripped tight, so Jenny Wren has now found a permanent home, but she isn't glued in place.

I made the Wren from 120gm card, not paper, so it is quite sturdy. I doubt if these clumsy old fingers would be able to perform well with paper as you are using for the Firecrest. I must explore my shed to see if I can find the Firecrest I made last year. It will probably look good on the same plant.

Pending that, I could always make another one ... or two, but I think the Bee-Eaters will be next.

Johnny.

Latest completions ... The Bride and Groom ...

They have now found semi-permanent perches on the fanlight window handles, but come Summer (if ever) they may have to move elsewhere.

Winter isn't in any hurry to go away here, so I pretty much spent every morning in the conservatory reading the mail (I get quite a bit) or snippin' paper. Communications are quiet lately, so I often spend the afternoon out there too, whilst the Wife snores at the television.

Here is a mechanical owl from the LA Times published in the 1930's.

Oscar the Owl

Barnacle Press used to have it and a bunch more on the site but they are no longer available there. They are now available here Newspaper Cut Out Toys - a set on Flickr posted by altomentis (Christine).

I still think that Malcolm Topp's bird mobile models from the 1970's rank as the best 'nature' models ever made - and without the benefit of 3d design or even a computer - real labours of love. It reputedly took him over a year and a half to design the Osprey - every feather hand painted. I made the Osprey as a teenager in the early 70's which I gave away in a house move but have purchased another (yes, you can still find them) which I am saving for a large period of inactivity in the future. I will never be bored! If you only want to try one that is of medium complication, try the Merlin (pictured) - and do build it as instructed - it is a unique and loose style that improves the final result - honest.

As usual, the system won't upload multiple images, sorry. That last one is Malcolm's Spotted Woodpecker and hopefully this'll have the Merlin.
