Scherfting away: Starling and Wren

Quite recently while I was working on my Ariane 5 and the parts I did weren't that satisfying in their result, I suddenly felt the need to make a bird. I love modeling birds and Johan Scherft's birds are amongst the bestest. Together with the Topp mobile birds.
So I ordered the Starling at Zeist Bouwplaten (Which is of course our friend Diderick A. Den Bakker) and he sent it to me. It is a big piece of paper, A3 and to make the posting a little cheaper he cut the sheet conveniently into three parts. I scanned the bird and printed one out at 120 gram paper. This way I can make a couple of birds together.
As usual with Johan Scherft, the starling is a very good model. It was straight forward to build and I just redid the feet because I wanted the bird to sit on a branch. I put floral wire (the stuff used to keep flowers straight, like a Gerbera) into the toes and the leg shaft and now I can bend them. There still was room for a rod inserted in the branch going into the leg part so the bird sits sturdy and snug on its branch.
Then, immediately afterwards, I did Scherft's wren model. I wanted to do it a little different here, too because I wanted the bird to sing. So I scratch built a new beak for the bird, using some picture of singing wrens as a template. I coloured the beak with water colour pencil and a little acrylic paint. it all went together smoothly. Its legs hide a small brass tube so the wren can sit on a branch while there is a little rod coming out of the branch going into the leg tube.

Very nice.

I like your mods re the feet. Very clever.

I always am trying to think of how to perch the birds when I make them, but never thought of this approach.

Do not actually think I am brave enough to try it!

This is a spruce up of the Bird Mobile Merlin. I say spruce up because the original kit I built I had bought 32 years ago when my wife and I were on our honeymoon. Anyhoo, I scanned the original kit before I built it a couple of years ago (when I first bought it, I had know idea about how to go about building it, or even what kind of glue to use). What I did was just auto enhance the scan in corel, then I boosted the gamma a little and got much more vibrant colors. I was kind of disappointed with the first build because the colors were so faded (the original had really yellowed) and the contrasts were very bad. Also I was disappointed with the feet, because the were just doubled up card stock that was supposed to be bent to shape. This is what I came up with....

That came out nicely. Boosting the colours was very effective.

I have one I bought recently and am working on. It also has very faded colours.

May try your trick on a second!

Very good.
I built that a few years ago. Those Bird Mobile models are nice.

Very nice Matt. The Siskin looks good too. Will you be making the templates available anywhere?

Can't believe I've missed out on this thread for almost three years. I've just finished reading through all 84 pages. You guys just cost me a bunch of money as I had to go by all Johan's recent birds.

@matt Love the work you're doing! Beautiful birds you've picked to model.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this fantastic thread.

Steve
