Barn Owl
I've been looking for a Barn Owl for some time. The only one I found was published by Leon Schuijt. At first I decided to leave it, mainly because I was looking for the British breed, which has a much lighter face. It appears that this breed is found in Europe.
However, when I realised that the model had been designed by Johan Scherft, I changed my mind - This isn't the first of his models I've made. The owl is 1:1 scale and stands about 13 inches tall (34cm) and is very much in Johan's style, although I get the feeling that it is one of his early designs. The kit was not a problem to make, my only reservation is that it has a gloss finish. BTW Canon have a Barn Owl but it's a bit too "cute" Cheers Mike |

That looks very realistic Mike. Nice build. From your comment about the gloss finish, I assume that Leon is selling pre-printed kits? They seem a little expensive for downloads, but as a kit I guess it's reasonable. No matter ... it's by Johan, and I ain't got it ... Bookmarked for purchase in the New Year when the credit card has cleared the Xmas Paypal.

I'm like John. It's on my "things to buy with Birthday money" list. Very nice build of a nice looking model. You already thought about this I'm sure, but a coat of matt clear sealer might knock down the shine a little bit.

Thanks for the comments.
It is a kit, but worth the money. I had thought about spraying it, but I've never had very good results, the varnish tends to "pool" in the joins and overlapping parts. Cheers Mike |

Hi Mike, very well done! I think this is indeed one of Johan’s earlier designs as I built it 20 years ago and I still have the model on display. If I’m not mistaken his first commercial model published by Lėon Schuijt was a couple of sparrows in ‘96 or about. It seems to me that your version has a darker print than mine and my version has a matt tone as well.
You could consider to apply matt varnish with a flat brush if you don’t want to spray. Just spray some in the cap of the can and use it as a paint jar. That’s what I usually do. Cheers, Erik |

My Owl was more of a matte/low sheen printing.
Definitely not glossy. Glossy does look a bit weird on a bird. My build: Johan Scherft's Barn Owl "De Kerkuil" The Owl's head is meant to be turned to the side, I had difficulty lining up the precise artwork patterns but if you got it to work straight on, then...
