Eatcrow, Doug, skidoosnopro, Vermin King, Vinalssergio155, Elliot - thank you all for your comments - much appreciated!

Vermin King - printing is done on a laser printer (smallish office machine). Varnished before building.

-------------------------

One thing I forgot to mention is that I really enjoyed making this model. It was a great build, fell together and has wonderful artwork (as you can see for yourselves). So a big thanks to Johan Scherft for this model. It makes a big difference to my motivation when Iknow the finished model is going to look great......

Fred and Don - also many thanks.

Don - I still owe you (and others) the Hoopoe/King Solomon story. Coming when I have the time to write it up!

---------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile, a last hoopoe snippet for those interested.....
  • One unique thing about the Hoopoe, is that to defend themselves against predators when nesting, the mothers and chicks both produce a foul-smelling liquid from their glands.
  • This secretion is very sticky, and they smear it on themselves and the nest access.
  • The secretions smell similar to rotting meat and this is why they are said to “foul” their nests.
  • Hoopoes can also squirt the secretions to deter people and animals – cats particularly are often targets and as result leave Hoopoe nests well alone once they have learnt!

Weather is poor, so no pics for the moment in a natural setting.

But as mentioned, here is the King Solomon story I have just dashed off about how the hoopoe got its crest - only a one-pager so have a look if you are interested, otherwise, of course, give it a miss!
