Barn Owl (redo Johan Schert)
Here was my next attempt to alter or repaint these cool models, the Barn Owl model was a printed one, quite large, and the original artwork is very nice hand drawn. For my purposes and because I was reluctant to cut up the original, I resized the model smaller and was hoping to change the pose of the owl as well as lighten the color --alot. The only Barns I have seen are the light colored version, and I was hoping if I could lighten enough and still maintain Johan's artwork which initially was a practice one, the darker colored try. These are really fun. I'm still using heavy cardstock, and the resulting models feel solid as a balsa or foam block, although the layering is easier to see, on this model mostly on the back of the head. I also changed the shape of the face to try to look more "heart shaped" as the face of this bird frequently described that way. We are just 50 miles to far north to see these widely (most widely distributed of nearly all bird species) distributed Owl, I start seeing them about 1 hour drive south .. I thought the grouping looked cool although 2 are for gifts....

A very fine stable of barn owls, Glen!
You have really produced some beautiful models since you began ringing changes on Johan Scherf's splendid birds. I'm still looking for white crowns and siskins in my back garden. No joy yet. Don |

Thanks Mike, the face design is quite clever by Johan on this one, has a disc behind he face that holds the parts in place, very creative design in a lot of ways. I thought I could improve the posterior head seam, but when I tried to I realized how cleverly it was already done!

Owls almost always show up unexpectedly, it's always a treat to see one.

Hi Glen,
That's a really neat group of owls. My wife got me a red tailed hawk paper model for Christmas so that will be up soon. We saw a Great Horned Owl near Missoula this past summer. I'd never seen one in the wild and it was super cool... Dan |

I was really hoping the owls would have had young again this last year, but they took off over Memorial Day weekend, so I guess none of the young ones survived.
Barney was so much fun the previous year.

Thanks Dan and Vermin King, Owls really are something special in appearance and behavior, and are they amazing predators. Your Baby Barred owl is really cute, and they tend to be fairly unafraid of people it seems too. I showed Johan the Barn owls and he said the Barn Owl was and early model for him and he would probably have quite a different model if he designed it now. I still found the overall parts of the bird as designed worked well, although did not use any of the leg supports planned with the original design, and did change the toes to 2 forward and 2 rear as owls have (like woodpeckers and some other birds)
