(12) Pristine Spirit ready for first flight at Dutch Flats

Handsome shot of the left side of the plane. The image clearly shows the position of the periscope. Lindbergh was initially skeptical of the viewing device, but allowed it to be installed after Hall assured him it would have only a small impact on the plane's aerodynamics. It worked well, allowing Lindy to see forward without having to lean to one side of the cockpit. Yet he used it only minimally, mostly at low altitude to sight smokestacks and other obstacles. He never used it for takeoff and landing - that would have been, in his words, "impracticable."

[Comment:] Note profile of wheels, acetate window inserted, and the stringers visible under the fabric all the way up to the metal cowling. According to one expert the aft line of the metal cowling was perpendicular, but no section aft of that. See: http://www.charleslindbergh.com/cgi-...c;f=2;t=000413
