Contemporary photo of the Spirit, probably post-flight, since the wing and other parts are dismounted. No further information about this photo.
Note torn flight schedule (or compass deviation table?) attached to the panel. It is not the same as in later photos of the Spirit as it is hanging from the Smithsonian roof today.
Note also the two largish knobs at the top of the instrument panel. They were there for the NYP flight, but what are they? They were not part of the original instrument panel in San Diego, at least not from the start; c.f. these images:
But for the NYP flight Lindbergh scrapped the on-board telephone batteries for instrument lighting (including the compass; weight considerations), which would have rendered them non-functional!
That is perhaps why the "caps" (lamps) were unscrewed for the NYP flight, while batteries and lamps may have been added for later US & LA continent-wide flights, and remaining so until today.
