Spirit of St. Louis, today, at the Smithsonian

The original Spirit has fared rather badly with time. It is covered with dust and grime, and it no longer looks like the pristine aircraft headed out over the Atlantic in 1927. Many changes, such as the louvres cut in the nose plates, and the many flags painted on the nose, were carried out during the short period of time the Spirit was flown all across the US, to Mexico, and to several other Latin American countries after having returned with boat across the Atlantic in dismantled state. Its last flight was 30 april 1928. In little less than a year 174 flights, totalling almost 490 hours, were undertaken by Lindbergh. No other person ever flew the Spirit. A log of the Spirit of St. Louis flights can be viewed at: http://www.charleslindbergh.com/history/log.asp
