Fun Facts about Fordsons

The Fordson was the Model T of tractors. Designed and built by Henry Ford, the name "Ford Tractor" was already in use, so he called it the Fordson after his son. It was first sold in 1918.

1. The top speed in high gear was 6.75 mph. It was not recommended.

2. You topped her up with 2 gallons of oil.

3. You started it on gasoline from a reservoir on the side of the engine, but you ran her on kerosene from that big 5 gallon tank on top.

4. The magneto was in the transmission housing. There was a commutator on the engine front near the bottom fan pulley, and the black box on the side contained four trembler coils. A lever on the dash provided spark advance. Due to wear on the magneto bearings, you wanted to park it pointing downhill, otherwise the magnets would be too close to the plate to start it.

5. The air cleaner was a water tank through which the engine sucked air (not unlike a bong). The water in the reservoir would turn to mud if you didn't clean it often enough. You had to drain the water out of the tractor if it looked like it was going to freeze.

6. Owners were encouraged to work on it themselves. The gaskets were paper, and the owners manual recommends cutting them out of newspaper and shellacking them on one side to prevent tearing.

7. They cost $795 new in 1918.
