This Renault 40CV reminds me of an enclosed version of the early Itala 4litre racer.
The brakes on this Renault would be equivalent, which is to say: "push foot and pedal through floorboards and pray Almighty God the beast stops in sufficient time to keep driver alive". Most braking systems of that era were either friction block or very crude expanding band. Neither of which would these days inspire confidence, or survivability.
