Too bad I did not catch your thread soon enough. The preeminent method to prevent the bamboo effect is to fill the spaces between bulkheads with sytrofoam and sand it to the final shape.
This also negates the need for joining strips of any kind and gives you a solid surface against which you can glue hull plates bereft of seam lines. Here's my thread on how to do it.
