Just to clear the things a little bit:
The-EDSEL: LibreOffice and OpenOffice are almost identical right now, LibreOffice has launched only a couple of minor versions (I think) since they branched from OpenOffice. So, some minor versions ago LibreOffice was OpenOffice

Uyraell: LibreOffice was launched after Sun was bought by Oracle.
Sun has bought StarOffice 5.2 from some German software company, then gave it as freeware ( $0 ), then upgraded it to StarOffice 6 (also $0), then changed it to OpenOffice (not only $0 but source code available free of charge too).
Now OpenOffice is at major version 3, and since Sun was bought by Oracle, Sun's free software offers were cut down (Solaris, OpenSolaris, OpenOffice and maybe others). Oracle's attitude towards OpenOffice is what lead to developers creating a new branch from OpenOffice's free software, branch they call LibreOffice
