Heinze Knocke says openly in "I Flew for the Fuhrer" that many in the German Armed Forces of the era would happily have joined the British and Americans and, using German equipment, gone on to fight Russia, after the death of Hitler.
Knocke argues that by 1945 Russia was actually the far greater threat than Germany ever had been.
He also makes the same point you have, Rich: given the technology Germany had available, and the leadership qualities of the various Generals and Admirals, Germany
should have won but did not, mainly due to Hitler's flaws.
Certainly in terms of advanced design jet fighters, and submarines Germany was ahead. The same is almost true with regard to tanks.
