This bird has been one of my favorite aircraft since at the tender age of 20 I had the privilege of watching the second prototype execute a near vertical takeoff in front of the McDonnell Douglas hangar in St Louis. I was an engineering intern at the time when an announcement of the exhibition was played over the office intercom. Just about the entire McD D engineering staff assembled on the tarmac to watch the show. With the ability to accelerate going straight up it was the closest thing to a Cape Kenedy rocket launch that I have ever seen.
My favorite model of the F-15 was the simple fold-up flying model sold in the cafeteria gift shop. It depicted the mighty bird in classic air superiority blue. Or as we called it robins eggshell blue.
