and other expensive equipment...
it all seemed a little too much to get into.

Until I came across a forum and did a little reading about a particular flatbed scanner.

You see, I was also looking for a cheap flatbed scanner at that time,
and I was hunting through sales of older scanners
looking for something that would work with Win XP.
(I had to have a flatbed scanner with a decent dpi scan)

I ended up buying one of the most common and cheapest flatbed
scanners, a Canon Canoscan 4200.
Canon CanoScan 4200F Photo, Film and Document Scanner - Canon UK

In the lid of the 4200 is a removable panel,
into which fits the Slide and negative holder that comes with the scanner.
It has preset scanning methods once you slide in a set of up to five Slides
or negatives...or you can do it all manually.

Its so fast...and so easy...and the results are as good as is possible.

Its a USB connection for the scanner, and updated drivers are available from Canon.

I bought my scanner like brand new (used), in its original packaging, for $25.
I'm sure there are still a few of these around if you hunt.
Its a good alternative.

Nice iPhone gadget!!
Is your phone waterproof? or do you put it into a case?
My little HD cam is waterproof...but I 'm not.
