F7U-3 Cutlass - Project Cutlass
The navy realised that the Cutlass due to the many innovations and complexity will need a special guiding hand in order to put the type correctly into service.
Therfore project cutlass imerged in July 1954 . The project took place on a carrier near
the shure of San Diego. The intention was to train both the pilots and ground crews on the
Cutlass in order to achieve smooth transition into the navy. The Cutlass had a special bridale
that was used per each catapulting and because of the amount of takesoff"s the Cutlass had a special Colleting device for the bridals. Project cutlass went smoothly and the first squadron to recieve the Cutlass was VF-124. The real service was far from smooth
as many as 75 Cutlases where crashed while in service and 21 navy pilots and
4 test pilots died , 3 of them with the dash one.
