Umm? How did the pet supply guy get hold of your card number? PayPal won't give it out. That's the whole point of the PP system. Paypal pay the dealer, and you pay paypal. That way the dealer doesn't get to see your card numbers. Used properly all they get is a delivery address, and Paypal shouldn't pay them until you notify receipt of goods. That last bit doesn't work on EBay though, 'cos EBay owns PayPal.
