Just to weigh in here...

I, too, have found Aleenes Tacky Glue satisfies most of my gluing needs. In fact, I've not experimented with much else. Though I do like using 'Necroscopic Adhesion' for laminating large areas (i.e., using an iron at high setting to melt a sandwich bag between layers of card).

I use a spare ceramic tile as a glue palette. Squirt a little Aleenes on the tile and use a dental tool to pick up a small glob to spread on the gluing surfaces. You can use the tool to scrape off any excess glue. The great thing about using the tile is that it is heavy enough to remain in place and doesn't stick to your applicator like a scrap piece of card does. Easy to clean, too.
