I was a Senior Tech Writer for Boeing for the better part of 23 years, assigned to the Chinook in Philadelphia! Actually, you're all wrong! The Helicopter (rotary wing aircraft) are indeed that ugly, and they are a bag of parts flying in loose formation, but the real secret is that a helicopter simply beats the air into submission!!? BTW, I think one or at MOST three levels of detail are best! Say:

Aircraft, lighter than air
Balloons
Commercial
Military
Blimps
Commercial
Military
Dirigibles
Commercial
Military

Aircraft, rotary wing
Aorogyro
Commercial
Military
Helicopter
Commercial
Military

Aircraft, fixed wing
Propeller driven
Commercial
Military
Jet
Commercial
Military

Rockets
Commercial
Military

Missiles

Or something along those lines!
