I was brought up on UHU in the 1960's (it was the glue recommended by J F Schriber) and have been using it ever since. I have are two ways of working with it:
1) For joins that will not be under stress just smear a little glue on one part and immediately marry the two parts together. The glue will grab but the nature of the beast allows you to slide the parts around a bit in order to get a perfect fit.
2) If the join is going to be under some strain then smear a thin layer of glue on each part and wait a few seconds for it to become very tacky - almost completely dry - before pressing the parts together.
Yes, it does string, but with a bit of practice it's possible to minimise this and unavoidable strings can just be snapped off when they have hardened. But like most things, UHU is not the be-all and end-all and I do use other adhesives (white PVA, superglue) on occasion. Hope this helps.
