I've made a couple of clocks and the wrebbit carousel. None of them worked after a few minutes.
The biggest problem is friction and the second is a lack of stiffness of the card, it won't support the weight if the weights and the friction of the cogs.
You could try heaver card where needed and "lubricating" the moving parts with candle wax.
I don't know the kit you have so hopefully a careful build and luck will be on your side!
