That is how theatre scenery was done from roughly sixteen hundred into the twentieth century. From the time theatre moved indoors until the electric lighting took the magic away.
Ingmar Bergman's 1975 film of Mozart's
Magic Flute shows how things worked in theatres circa 1791. This style of scenery (wing and drop) could be very effective.
