I just turned off the updates for my Win 7 laptop.
There is a Net Framework update that ruins the Windows 7 GUI and causes boot errors.
I used System Restore to roll back to before the update was installed.
I googled the problem, it is a well documented problem, but the fix is complex, beyond my abilities to carry out, and the problem is going to recur every time the buggy Net Framework update tries to reinstall. So I turned off the updates from MicroSoft rather than taking the risk that some update down the line is going to completely brick my computer.
At least, my Win10 computer is behaving itself so far.
