It's an official google app, so yes it uses Google Translate, I was simply suggesting it as an easier option than scanning and copying and pasting etc, it does everything you want in 2 or 3 clicks.
I think the main problem you're having here is like Don suggested, Japanese is not a language that simply translates. It reminds me of the craze in Japan during the 80s or 90s when there was a popular fashion trend involving English slogans on T-shirts, way before the days of Google Translate. Some of the slogans they came up with were either hilarious or just made no sense at all.
