Rubber Cement has been a common masking material in all types of painting for a hundred years.
Artists and Illustrators have used it on all types of surfaces.

It was used by airbrush artists for a long time (painting cars and bikes, etc).
...being solvent based, I guess it was more compatible with solvent based painting materials.
We never wanted anything with water anywhere near the painted surface, otherwise it could contaminate and ruin the paint job.
When I first got into airbrushing, I used rubber cement a few times.
Now, everything is water based, and there are related masking fluids that are more compatible.
