Don - the photo was taken in the country west of Johannesburg toward the Magaliesburg mountains.

southwestforests - you would win the wager! Looking at what was left there was a type of radiator (non liquid with a distinct electrical connotation) at the front and indications that there were mounts for motors on the wheels.

Zambia.

Picture 1 - In the NW of Zambia, on Shiwa Estate (Picture 3) are the remains of an old steam engine formerly used in the estate. Some major parts (including the canopy) are missing and although looking fair still, it is far gone. A pity, as with a spot of paint and some care... As it is, it is doomed to rot away (classified as a Heritage Item it cannot leave Zambia).

Identified as Fowler 13053, it is a unique engine, being only the one of its kind - it is a Road Locomotive of Fowler’s B6 type, but what makes it special and a one-off is that it was fitted with a special long firebox and a superheater (the first time a superheater was fitted to a road haulage engine).

The B6 was a descendant of the B5 (used by Fowler for the armoured tractors). Landships has an article on the B5...

JB Models also made a B5 model. It was available for free from the ecardmodels site.

Picture 2 - A catalogue picture of the same one and only engine.
