Garry's model is of a Grumman F4F-3P Wildcat photo-reconnaissance fighter of Marine Observation Squadron 251 based at Espiritu Santo in the fall of 1942.
A number (at least ten) F4F-3s were converted to armed photo-reconnaissance aircraft in Navy repair depots and designated F4F-3P (photo). Aerial cameras were installed in the lower starboard fuselage with a cable to the cockpit to operate a trap door that covered the camera opening. Grumman also developed a very long range (3,000 miles, 24-hour endurance) photo-recon version of the F4F, the F4F-7, some of which served during the Guadalcanal Campaign alongside F4F-3Ps in Marine Observation Squadron 251 (VMO-251).
VMO-251 with its octopus insignia flew out of Espiritu Santo, in the New Hebrides Islands during the Guadalcanal Campaign. Espiritu Santo was where the headquarters for the Guadalcanal operation (Operation WATCHTOWER) was located.
I have been unable to determine the Bureau of Aeronautics Number (BuNo) for 251-MO-1 (Garry's model), but the web site for Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251 (VMA-251 - the descendent of VMO-251) has historical information and, in the galleries, images of F4F-3Ps:
