There are some examples where the tender does not fit with the loco due to a change in design or the re-use of older tenders.
One good example is the LMS 2-6-0 Crabs, where older Fowler design tenders were fitted rather than the L&Y style ones expected to be used. As a result the tenders were about 4" wider.
I attach a photo of the preserved one at Bury, The difference doesn't show up really but it is there!
