Out of our 5 cats, three (including two ex ferals) will DEFINITELY COME when called, one will generally come, and the last one is a bit iffy about coming.
My own personal opinion is that it relates to the actual psychological make-up of the cat, and the ability to socialise with other cats - ferals are good at this.
It took one of the cats (a "will generally come" one), which was a stray that adopted us, about two weeks only to catch on to a name. And she is improving daily.
The cats that respond well are also very vocal - the more vocal they are, the more responsive to their name (and other commands) they are.
Interesting as they obviously have a strong desire to communicate/interact.
Cats in the wild are naturally social.
