Okay, this is an “N” scale model, (1/160), an interesting story of the Planter’s Inn and Oliver Sturges House, let’s ignore the Planter’s Inn for a moment and talk about the Oliver Sturges house.
Located on Reynolds square, in the heart of the Savannah, Georgia, the city that General Sherman declared was, “too beautiful to burn” sits the Planter’s Inn and Oliver Sturges house, recognized on the National Registry of Historic Places.
Built in 1813 by Oliver Sturges, successful Savannah merchant, it occupies what was the site of the parsonage of John Wesley, minister of the Church of England in Georgia 1736-37 and founder of Methodism in America.
Originally a, “twin house” with a duplicate directly adjacent, Mr. Sturges' partner, Benjamin Burroughs, lived in the other residence, when that residence was destroyed by fire, the original, “Wesley Hotel” was then built on the site, adjacent to the Oliver Sturges house.
I believe that the Planter’s Inn. in it’s current configuration was built in the early 1970’s on the site of the original Wesley Hotel.
