IPMC 2019 Awards

I will post more images over the next few days, but for now, here is the report on the IPMC 2019 Awards.

1. The sempiternal and inscrutable IPMC Awards Committee. Left to right: Greg Perry, Lil Boose, Don Boose, Anne McCombs, Ray Smith.

2. The Committee awarded a special award for its Contribution to Education Through Paper Modeling to the Stuart Hall School, which participated in the event this year, along with teachers Brad and Ashley Arnold. The models designed and built by the students and the faculty were superb.

3. In fact, the model of Yoda and the “Brad and Ashley” wedding mice received several People’s Choice votes.

4. The Greg Perry Silk Purse out of a Sow’s Ear award went to Tom Greensfelder and Alan Wheeler. I have an image of Greg announcing the award, and he has posted images: http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/687989-post60.html

5. There was some talk of a special “Sow’s Ear Out of a Silk Purse” award for Steve Brown for his P-51 with the warped wing, collapsed undercarriage, and glue smears, but we thought he might have taken it as a criticism.

6. The Most Unusual Model Award was presented to Kell Black for his collection of a stapler, a Kodak Brownie Box Camera, and clothes pin. Kell’s paper model of a paperclip is on display in a museum.

7. The best table display award went to Tom and Olivia Greensfelder for their superbly presented collection of antique paper models. Linda Kemp, the incoming Awards Committee Chair on the right.

8. Rick Steffers won the Most Creative Purposeful Misinterpretation of the Theme Award for his Spocktoberfest display.

9. The Theme Award (“OKTOBERFEST – Anything German: buildings, airplanes, ships and watercraft, living creatures, automata, land vehicles of all types, science fiction, fantasy, and real spacecraft and objects, and any other category you can think of, so long as it is German. The final decision as to sufficient Germanicity lies, as always, with the infallible, ineffable, indomitable, and indefatigable Awards Committee.”) went to Linda Kemp for her model of Rembrandt van Rijn’s Night Watch on the Way to Oktoberfest.

10. Jack Colin received a special theme award because every single model on his table was German in one way or another. He was also in German dress and drinking German bier from a German stein. I deeply regret that I do not have an image of Jack as a German leprechaun, but trust that someone else captured this phenomenon on film.

11. The People’s Choice Award is determined by a vote by every IPMC participant and visitor, each of whom was given a ballot and asked to vote for the model they liked the best using whatever criteria they chose. Jack Colin’s Howl’s Moving Castle (which was displayed by a proxy at another table) won by a landslide. When we counted the ballots, we found that there was also one write in vote for “Jack’s Lederhosen.” Unfortunately, all I have for now is a partial image of the winning model.

12. The People’s Choice Ballot Box.

We also passed the baton. As mentioned, Linda Kemp is now the Chair of the Awards Committee with Steve Brown, Anne McCombs, and Ray Smith as members. Greg Perry will continue to endow and award the Silk Purse Out of a Sow’s Ear Award.
