Alan - glass is a good surface to use when building a ship. Yes, it is heavy so it does not move around much. And the advantage is it provides a dead flat surface and as Kurt says, makes it easy to cut the ship off later.

I use plate glass and have a few pieces - all of which I got free from the places that sell glass! I just went in and asked them them to cut me a piece of plate glass to the rough dimensions I wanted and then finished the edges, and every case they go off, find an offcut of the rough size, finish it and present it me free! I have always tried to pay but they are not interested!
