This is how I create parts...with my minds eye and some math!
In general I don't use 3D software (CAD, Sketchup, etc) to design my models.
I create almost everything already unfolded in 2D with Coreldraw.
So it means creating basic drawing patterns and using a lot of math.
I do a good job of imagining the part and how it will assemble...
but theres usually some trial and error with test fitting parts.
Calculating an elliptical tube with offset ends is fairly straightforward
but you need to establish some basic things first...
