When you are cutting with a knife, make a short cut that is comfortable for you then pick up the card (usually it will stay with the knife blade) and move it to the same spot and repeat until you are all the way around. Trying to cut the whole circle at one time is very difficult, just make short cuts. I cut most circles by hand, and find the compass type devices hard to use and less accurate.
I do us a book punch for small circles, and have found that it is easier to use if you use a circle template to guide the tool.
Another tip is to cut the piece away from the page, it is easier to work with a smaller piece.
If the model is not a on line download, scan the pages first so you can reprint them if you make a mistake.
