Sounds like good advice from Alan, and certainly the cheapest solution in the short run.
It may be worthwhile considering a more expensive, but also more capable printer with ink tanks instead of cartridges.
This is not an area of expertise for me, but I have been very happy with the Epson ET-4750 over the past couple of years. It is NOT cheap, but I no longer have the problem of lines running through my copies (when it happens, a few cleaning cycles clear up the problem) and I no longer have to replace ink cartridges often. The ink refills are expensive, but a refill lasts me for the better part of a year. I also find the scanning function to be very useful.
