As I am interested in Russian paper modeling, I have been a member of several communities on VK for years. Have not had any issues.
It is the No 1 site used in Russia.
They have had quite a strong stance against piracy, and even have developed tools to remove pirated material.

John, in terms of safety, confidentiality or privacy, one can debate the conspiracy theories endlessly - it is certainly more secure than a number of popular Western choices, including the social media choices such as Facebook.
