Konginio, as rickstef correctly stated, DirectX it's a software library, not a file format. I'll give you an example: suppose you have an MP3 audio file (a song, a speech, whatsoever). You can use the free software program VLC to listen to it. If someone asked you which type is the file, you would answer "mp3"; instead, if asked you what you used to listen to it, you would answer "vlc". Stating that your 3d model is in DirectX format it's like you tell that your audio file is in VLC format. It's wrong, because the two information (the file format and the program name) are incongruent.

Normally, the name of the file has an extension, separated from the rest of the base name by a point, like in "basename.extension". Also, in general the extension indicates the type of the file, that is the format with which data are stored inside it.
What is the name of the file you are talking about? If you can give us this information, we can help you more efficiently.
