Looks really beautiful and your description sounds intriguing too!
I see the scaled down worm screw is a difficult thing to be recreated. Maybe it will be better to roll double wide strip (cut along in halves and laid flat on the desk) around the rod and then remove one of halves in order to secure the constant width of a gap (thread pitch)?
