That's interesting. I can see it will work well for small diameter/small scale gun barrel models since the taper of the barrels is handled by the shape of the mandrel (needle). I'm not sure the technique would scale up to larger scales since many gun barrels are quite complex shapes with tapered sections. For those who haven't studied such things real gun barrels are made up of concentric tubes which are shrunk onto the inner tubes. Attached is a drawing of a WW1 155mm field gun - the barrel is made of 5 tubes (not including the breech) with square and tapered joins.
