A little more work done on the U-Wing this weekend. I was focusing on the core and how to make the wings moveable.
From the reference photos I could see that there is an extension from the hull that goes into a slot in the wings to hold it into place. I was using layers of 160gsm cardboard to get the different profiles and the required thickness. This is the current prototype of the upper assembly on the core structure. Here the core without the cockpit part. The wing is in closed position (hiding the core extension rail on that side). In open wing position the extensions become visible. The movement of the wing is constrained by the profile on the back. There will be parts added that hold the rotation axle and hide the end of the wing on top and bottom. But before I get to that I now need to work on the top/cockpit and bottom/transport room hull assemblies first to be continued ...

Looks great so far. I like the wing rotation design.
I started work on a version as soon as I saw the first pictures of the U-Wing but life got in the way. TIE Striker next maybe..........?

I know it's been a while and I realized that the U-Wing will not build itself on its own and the release date of Rogue One is approaching relentlessly
So decided that I will focus on the U-Wing set this week. I was planning to do a version with moveable wings but all the test I made haven't been 100% satisfying and will require advanced paper modeller. So I decided to start with an easy version. It will be in closed/landed wing position only. The purpose is to have a troop transport vessel for gaming that you can place in landing position on the gaming table (or shelf to just show of your minis). I will make a 15mm version and a 30mm version that with scaling should allow to build for any regular mini sizes. Actually if you print the A4/30mm version on A3 paper it will give an even greater size range Yesterday I have been focusing on the hull of the 15mm version, redoing what I had to a very simple unfold design. Top side of the hull (with marker test textures) And the underbelly (where the troops actually are located) I am using the Revell Kit to check if my research so far was correct. Today I was looking to find a unfold solution for the engine modules. I settled for a core structure onto which you will skin the engine tubes (two layered). Here the main engine tube is on the core already and the aft part is awaiting assembly. And finally the engine module assembled and glued into position. The inner parts of the engines are designed for 160gsm paper (1/4mm thin). I found the "thinner" paper better for the rounded parts. With the two layers glued the finished engine is very sturdy one dried. I now have to finish some missing parts (front and end of the hull and the guns) and then it's on to texturing. Chris

I'm glad this hasn't ended up in the limbo that most of my designs seem to find.
Even the 15mm version looks to be fairly large. How long will this end up being?

Yes, the wings are very, very long. A strange design :-) Don't think they are needed for atmospheric flight.
The 15mm version is almost 30cm/11.8" long. So the 30mm version will be double!

Quick update for today: got the engines textured. I am still finding little details when looking at research images (and adding them to the file) but the main part is done.
Got two engines built today and very happy with the results. Esp the seams of the tubes have been new terrain for me but they can be built quite easily now. Let me know if you see any major texture problems or missing details. I will try to update if I can :-)

Thank you!
Today adding the front and back parts for the top side of the hull. Getting there but not 100% happy yet. I modified the back to resemble the original more, but with the front there are areas where I cannot position the glue flaps precise and that is something I do not like. Also I might redo the guns. This version is maybe a little too simple.
