Shunichi Makinos Millenium Falcon 2017
When I found out that Shunichi Makino made a new version of the Millenium Falcon (see 1/144 thread here) I wanted to build one myself. I was really impressed by the detailing shown in the preview pics. And I see more detailing potential if you start doubling up the hull panels etc. So without further ado here is my build thread
First of all, you can download the model here: SF ペーパークラフト ギャラリー The core structure starts with two of these circular shapes... ... which get extended by the mandible parts. The inside of the core "sandwich" is filled with these structural parts and then you add the connecting "walls". Before you close the sandwich you have to add the recess parts on the mandibles. In the instructions they are glued on edge so I made these little parts to help me glue them better. Now it's time to close the sandwich! Just have a look at the detailing already here. That's all for today. See you next time! Chris

Thanks for the build thread. I'm sure it will be useful to all of us.
I like big build threads and I can deny it. |

What weight of paper are you using, and is it a laser or ink jet print?
Thanks RH |

I am using my regular 160gsm paper just because I have loads of it. If I build it again I think I will use 250gsm (and 300gsm for the doubled up detail parts to raised them a little higher). I am printing on ink jet printer.
Next up was the completion of the top and bottom core structures. Then I started with some of the textured parts. First the front parts ... ... and placed onto the assembly. Because I am using 160gsm paper I am also putting all the details on before I assemble and glue so I can press a little onto the (yet) flat parts and let them dry. Next the sideways corridors ... I am only showing one side. Every side is different and very accurately detailed. For example these are the details for the clamps holding the escape pods (conical shapes on the sides). That's as far as I have come today. I can see the Falcon taking shape! :-) And finally a detail shot of the ... details :-) Notice the doubled (and tripled) up parts on the top section and the clamps on the sides! Looking forward to the next step: the top and bottom dish cover :-)

Following with great interest. I downloaded this new version of the Falcon, but have yet to build it. Your thread will help greatly.

I am curious how the dishes will fit to the core structure. I imagine that will be the challenging assembly.
If I build it again I am thinking about blowing this up from A4 to A3 paper and then do the paneling doubling up. But that's maybe for x-mas holidays :-)

That would be a cool ornament
I started working the radar dish today and that all went pretty smooth. The cockpit arm was more of a challenge. I changed a couple things. For example I usually cut of the circular glue tabs and make a part that I glue under, so I have to "step" at the seam. For the front of the cockpit there was not much space so I glued the edges directly. And just to make sure, after it dried, I added another safety part. Then I was able to close the front. Next I prepared the other parts and assembled all except the one with the windows. That I wanted to build doubled up. This part would become the under glued one so I added glue tabs in both directions. ... and then - carefully - glued the top part on. The window frames are very thin! The "under" part I trimmed at the edges so I wouldn't have problems at the seam. The reminder of the cockpit came together fairly easy. Just the corner connection needed more care. The top half dish was very easy. No challenges there. When I glued the cockpit on I noticed that it has a ledge on the bottom side (like the original!) so I couldn't glue the top onto the core. I need to make the bottom dish first. Tomorrow

Downloaded this today, looks like a really nice model.
Think i will enlarge to A3 and print most pages twice to allow for extra panel details. Also could Uhu02s cockpit be reduced to fit? RH |
