Hmmm.... I removed part 6 from the rear fuselage and made a template, which was fine. However, it won't sit flush in the fuselage as designed.
The rear fuselage cut-out should be the black area, and this surface is angled backwards. I believe part 6 is meant to mate its own angled surface to this from inside, showing an internal box section - if the orange area of part 6 is meant to be at the rear of the box, the only way for it to work, as printed, is if the orange part is mirrored to the bottom (as indicated by the two arrows). Perhaps it's a design error? |

Photo 1: The forward and main fuselage parts are joined and the tailplane assembled and attached. I added card bracing inside the tailplane, for rigidity. I added the number 1 from the card sheet as the craft number. I replaced the rear propulsion unit (but did not recess it) - but more work to be done there....
Photo 2: I added some black detailing aft of the canopy - this improves strength and looks good. Photos 3, 4 and 5: I made four anti-gravity pods for the underside of the fuselage and connected them, as shown. I also started adding some black panel details. Really enjoying this build...... |

What I had in mind to hide the 'ecard models' logo on the upper and lower wing surfaces was to use waterslide decals. From my spares box, I used RAF upper and lower wing roundels. These were originally from Spitfire and Hurricane decal sheets, so are from the WW2 era ..... Which is fine by me.
The first photo shows the positions of the roundels - the insides of the wing surface were first reinforced with scrap card. The fold lines were scored before decal application (to avoid damage). The second photo shows the decals attached and dried and the third photo shows one wing assembled and the other partially assembled. Care should be taken to get as much water off the decal before application, to avoid warpage of the card. The decals will be protected later by a coat of varnish. |

I also made some RAF fin flashes, from the same era.

I wanted to be able to display the craft at rest, which requires an undercarriage. Not a run-of-the-mill undercarriage, as wheels are not required for a machine that uses anti-gravity and ion-propulsion.
I made a tripod undercarriage from scrap card as shown. These will be painted in aluminium. Each section has a landing light on the front. I haven't decided on the positioning of the rear parts - photos 2 and 3 show a dry run (wings not yet attached). I may even attach the rears on the wings, rather than fuselage...... The model is essentially complete - I've been applying a weathered finish to the flying surfaces. This photo shows the glazing masked up with Bare Metal Foil, before varnishing. I am using a matt spray varnish. After that, I will paint the undercarriage in natural steel.
The photos that will follow in the next day or so will be of the finished model. |

The Light Training and Reconnaissance Craft has been completed.
This is my first attempt at a paper/card model of a flying vehicle. I wanted to do a tribute to the Red Arrows (of the future), in a classic Gerry Anderson style. In summary, I scratchbuilt the undercarriage, detailed and glazed the cockpit, applied waterslide RAF upper/lower wing roundels and fin flashes, weathered the flying surfaces, and coated the model in matt varnish. The anti-gravity pods on the underside of the fuselage were made from scrap card. There are port and starboard navigation lights on the upper wings, and the blue circles on the fuselage underside and rear of the tailplane represent cameras. |
