1/28th Thunderbird 2
A bit of an OTT lockdown project that got a bit out of hand.
I scaled up Ijoy's Thunderbird 2 model and I think it is about 1/28th scale. I used pepakura/metasequoia to scale up and draw out the templates onto many sheets of A4 and cut the parts out of a thin foam sold for underfloor insulation. The foam is embossed on one side with squares that helped with alignment and the other side is ribbed very finely which gave me a "grain" to help with the curving to shape. I glued the foam with UHU POR that has a very good grip and it's very dry and it is ideal for papercraft as well I have found. Needless to say the fit was'nt perfect so there are slivers of foam and filler in many places. I had some emulsion paint made up and big brush painted it. The markings are a mix of tape and sticky vinyl cut out with one of them craft cutting machines. The whole thing weighs 4kg. i have seen some electric ducted fans that can geenrate 1.5kg of thrust each so it might be possible to get a flying drone out of this someday.

The TB2 is actually a lifting body vehicle like the US Space shuttle.
I’m not sure 4 kg is light enough to fly with ducted fans regardless of their thrust. Too heavy and it may need really fast airspeeds to fly normally. Too slow and you will be flying with high angle of attack close to stall speed I’m looking forward to your successes Isaac

I wasn't expecting "flight" as it doesn't have any control surfaces. it doesn't take much wind to shift it across the garden so at best I was hoping to hover and gently move around in still conditions. The fans would certainly be struggling as ducting air to them would be tricky as well. Anyway slowly reading up on the basics of drone Thrust/weight ratios and might give it a go. One idea is to use helium to reduce the "weight".
