Rodger Young (BETA)

Been a long time since I started a thread. I'm currently working on the Rodger Young from "Star Ship Troopers". For the life of me, I can't remember the name of the designer, but he/she put a lot of good effort into this model. The designer admitted that this was not a final model, but since having found it, I have yet to see a revised version. I'm about 50% done and I have had to start from scratch in a lot of areas, but the model was easy enough to figure out so far. The one major compliment I have to give the designer is for his design method. The model is mostly broken up into simplified geometry so that when put together, it looks great and has more than enough internal structure to keep it solid. I will post Pics of what I have so far. Once I'm done with the build, I will post a list of corrections that need to be made. I might even consider doing a remodel.

That would be me... I knocked together the Beta of the RY a couple of years ago.

Thanks for the compliments, and I look forward to seeing your build!

The Main Hull is done. Most of the work left is towards the back now. I've been a little slow lately because a lot of these parts span multiple pages and we all know how that can be a pain to line up.

Hey Ekuth, Thanks for letting me know. I have so many models that sometimes the details slip through the cracks. A few random questions,

1. What did you use to design it?
2. Where did you get your textures from? (i assumed custom)\

And just a random comment, but, I was messing around with the pdf and decided to print at 100 percent. I don't even want to imagine trying to build the monster that came out of my printer, lol.

Seeing as you designed it, I appreciate any comments and criticism along the way.

Gee, that's coming really nice. I would definitely sit on the sofa and make all kinds of space sounds with that.

Sit on the sofa? You could just about sit in the spaceship.

I used Metasequoia to design it and Pepakura for the unfold... it was a nightmare in Meta, believe me. I tried to design it in a modular method for ease of assembly and strength, which from your comments and my own build seems to have worked.

The textures were semi-custom; Gearz actually sent me a texture pack that he used(uses) alot on his work and I altered what I didn't like.

Looks like you're coming along nicely... I forget; are you following the instruction I wrote or building it without? If you don't have them, it's even more impressive, as it's not an easy build even with them. Some of the shapes are a little complex to fold.

If you need them, the set is available in the Z download area, or I can post them.

Somewhere on my hard drive I've got the master files... I was going to do a high res texture version until I learned the Pepakura High Rez exporter is like $300...

I figured it was Meta. Yes I have both the Word and PDF formats of your instructions and they do help. The only thing i can't seem to get from them are some of the placements of parts (no clear indications in certain areas, but going by eye has worked so far).

I have attributed all of the issues with the model to one thing, Symmetry. From front to back the model is fine. From side to side, well lets just say it looks like the computer freaked out during the Pep. transfer. It's like the right side of the model was accidentally extruded out in a bunch of random places. A lot of the pieces that i remade were because the geometry wasn't centered. I had begun to assume that it was just computer error, but I wasn't sure since some parts were fine.

Anyway, I love the model, and you definitely put a lot of work into it. If you are going to work on it again, I can throw together a list of the areas that need some editing.
