Enterprise-D Lifeboat (ASRV)

This was a design by Rick Sternbach that didn’t make it into any episodes but after seeing a cutaway diagram and lengthy explanation of it online I had to see if I could make one. It’s mostly finished now except that I’ve reworked the sign next to the hatch to display the actual text (a picture of which was posted on a Facebook comment by no less than Rick Sternbach himself, who seemed to approve of my efforts!) and I want to include some other lifeboat numbers so you can make a few and they can be displayed in “gaggle mode”.

Some of the references I used

There’s higher resolution versions available online that I worked from. The sketches were helpful in naming parts.

This is nice. Interesting going with the cube approach, but makes sense when seeing the lifeboats "clumped" together.

Are you planning on releasing the model?

Most interesting, I was under the impression that lifeboats/pods would be round.
Enjoy,
Miles

Yes I’m hoping to upload it in the downloads section soon.

Excellent bit of designing and construction! (And I will attest Sternbach is a nice guy. Years ago, I emailed him some questions about color and font of Saturn 1B markings and he was very helpful and generous. And another time, he wrote out of the blue to compliment me for a couple of original Star Trek scratchbuilds that were displayed online.)

I was thrilled that the guy who actually designed the thing chimed in and even offered more detail I can add. Sometimes it still amazes me that normal people like us can converse with the people who designed my favorite sci-fi stuff.

(He also provided a diagram he drew of a never-realized unmanned survival package designed for the places on the ship where a 4x4 meter cube wouldn’t fit. I’d never seen it mentioned anywhere before so it’s pretty esoteric I guess. So that will have to be a companion piece soon.)
