Radio Kootwijk; 1/900

Art Deco as a style never really took off in the Netherlands, although the Dutch had their own derivative with the "Amsterdamse School". But real Art Deco is hard to find there.
However, in National Park De Veluwe in the middle of the country, there is a large circular open area with a giant cathedral made of concrete. It is called Radio Kootwijk and was built in 1918-1923 to provide better radio communictions with the Dutch East Indies, one of the Dutch colonies in those years. Large machines were installed in the big, decoratively tiled hall and giant antennae were raised around the building.
In WW2, the Germans used the radio transmitters to communicate with their submarine fleet. After the war, The Netherlands lost their colony in the east and Radio Kootwijk slowly lost its purpose, especially after the invention of communication satellites and it closed in the late sixties.
Now Staatsbosbeheer (the State Forest Management) is the owner of the complex and it is used for cultural events.
I visited the complex twice, it is very beautiful and impressive. I recommend a visit when you are in the neighbourhood.

Now for the model. It still is freely downloadable (PDF; A2(!)) so take your chance. You will have to find a way to split the large A2 sheet into 4xA4.

I didn't make any pictures of the build in progress, I was on a roll. I can only show you the final result. I printed the model on 2 A4 sheets, so the scale became about 1/900. It was not even that tricky. I superdetailed it by cutting all the windows out and replacing them with ones from a second print behind the cut holes. I also doubled up the façades of the entrances and gave the pond on the square in front of the building a little more depth with some acrylic transparent gloss paint as water.

Here it is, I hope you like it!

Very very nice!

And I really like your build and the additions and detailing you added.

Interesting building with an interesting history. I personally think Art Deco is generally pretty revolting, but this building is not too over the top.

I recall an airport that had still in the 70's an Art Deco Terminal along with a couple of Art Deco hangers. Ugh!

Compliments with this remarkable buuilding.
Somewhere in my stash I still have a printed version of it...

And one of my favorite Dutch bands Knight Area,
used it as a background in some photshoots.

A must-build, sometime...

That's a very nicely built model Paper Kosmonaut. The fact that it is so small reveals your great skills. Thanks for sharing.

Regards,
Erik

Thank you all. Happy to be posting again, I have been a little out of the running, I guess. I will come up with some more new builds soon. There's stuff on the way.
